Description
I’ll never forget it. I was sitting in a semi-lit room for youth bible study when the speaker, a young man who appeared to be sixteen or seventeen, told us to open our bibles to the book of Philemon. For the first time in a long time I had to depend on the table of contents to navigate my way through a book I thought I knew well. Philemon? What? That’s a book in the bible? Low and behold, I finally found it. And when I did, I was surprised I hadn’t heard of this book given it was written by Paul. I love the apostle Paul. From there the young speaker of the night introduced the book to us, laid out its structure, and the rest is history. The way my face stood permanently shocked for the remainder of that bible study! I couldn’t believe what I was reading. What I was receiving.
The book of Philemon is actually a letter, an epistle. One of thirteen epistles written by the apostle Paul in the New Testament of the Holy Bible. The apostle Paul has since made a big name for himself among the Jews and Gentiles. Previously known as Saul (his Hebrew name) he zealously persecuted Jewish Christians for believing in Jesus Christ. Fast forward to the time of this letter, Paul himself was being persecuted for believing in Jesus Christ. And in the midst of it all, he takes the time to write a letter to a dearly beloved friend whose name is Philemon. And though small in size, Philemon is big in truth. Every word, every verse, every sentence, every paragraph, is packed with revelation upon revelation upon revelation. My prayer is that as we journey through this letter together, one of Paul’s most personal letters ever written, that you will open your mind and open your heart to receive all God has for us through the words of a letter penned to a dearly beloved friend.
Here’s what I’ve noticed: most preachers rarely preach from this letter. No judgement though, just an observation. You probably never heard of this epistle. That’s okay. Or, you probably heard of this epistle but skipped right over it because of its size. That’s okay too. I’m glad you’re here now. In the words of Paul to his spiritual son Timothy, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, (ESV) English Standard Version). It doesn’t matter the size, or the placement of the book in the bible, or its popularity amongst other preachers and Christians, or the number of red letters it may or may not have—all Scripture is breathed out by God. And if all Scripture is breathed out by God, then all Scripture is worth studying.
Philemon is like no other letter written by the apostle Paul. He took a chance when he wrote this letter. And by the end of this study, I hope you are convinced that that chance was worth it.
